Football’s return isn’t a standalone advertising event. It’s a seasonal proof point for a case Media Manager makes year-round: live, ad-supported television commands attention at a scale few other channels match, and football shows it plainly.

The scale is real

NFL advertising revenue hit $5.9 billion for the 2025-26 season, up 7% year over year, with regular-season TV revenue climbing 6% to $4.1 billion and playoff advertising up 13% to $1.1 billion, per Sportico. The NFL alone commands 47% of all US sports TV dollars, and college football adds another meaningful share on top of it. Sports TV spend overall is projected to reach $24.83 billion by 2030.

Football lifts the whole ad-supported picture, not just itself

Nielsen’s Q4 2025 Ad Supported Gauge found sports viewing surged 135% during football season, pushing overall ad-supported TV to its highest level of the year and nearly doubling sports’ own share of that viewing to 34%. The effect isn’t isolated to football programming. Live sports draws attention back to ad-supported television broadly, at a time of year when a lot of other viewing has fragmented across platforms.

Where people watch is splitting, not shrinking

Broadcast still carries the majority of NFL ad revenue at $5.19 billion versus $676 million on streaming, but streaming’s football audience is growing too, with Amazon’s playoff games and Peacock’s postseason coverage helping push streaming to a record 46.6% share of ad-supported viewing in Q1 2026. Audiences aren’t choosing one screen over the other. They’re watching football on both, often in the same week, which is exactly why broadcast and streaming buys are now being planned together.

Sports inventory tightens fast once the season starts, and clients who wait to react are usually bidding against demand that’s already priced in. At Media Manager, we build the plan around when attention peaks, whether that’s football in the fall or another moment elsewhere in the mix later in the year.

The advertisers who get the most out of any high-attention window aren’t the ones chasing only the loudest channel. They’re the ones who planned across their full mix before the scarcity showed up in the rate card.
